New for 2012 is the Canopus “The Maple” 12-ply snare drum. Building upon the success of the Canopus “The Maple” 8-ply snare drums, this new 12-ply model features a slightly thicker shell that boasts increased projection and a phenomenal full tone. This particular drum is 6.5×14 (with a 12-ply all maple shell) and is outfitted with Die cast hoops, eight Canopus brass-plated single point lugs with a beautiful Natural Satin Oil finish. Shane says emphatically, “Every serious player should have one of these in their arsenal!”

Welcome to the inaugural issue of “This Week in Drums,” the first in a new series of bi-monthly posts highlighting the most recent arrivals at the Drum Center of Portsmouth. Next week (November 16th) will be the launch of “This Week in Cymbals,” a similar review of the latest and greatest gear to grace us with its presence, but with a particular focus on bronze pies!

This first issues features 40 new snare drums and 5 new drum sets. Admittedly, we have cheated a little bit and decided to showcase most of the gear that has landed in the last three weeks or so. There is actually quite a bit more, but much of it has sold already. Future issues will likely be a bit shorter with less gear being shown.

Canopus 3 ply Oak Snare Drum 5.5×14
New for 2011, Canopus is now offering this beautiful 3 ply Oak snare drum. The sound character of Oak is bright and crisp, with a very pronounced sharp sound. Resonance after the attack is short, but the sound is very sharp.
The rim shot of the Canopus Oak snare has an amazing crack that many feel is superior to those of other shell materials. In short, it’s a great offering from Canopus that is a vintage approach to a modern sound.
