Welcome to the inaugural issue of “This Week in Drums,” the first in a new series of bi-monthly posts highlighting the most recent arrivals at the Drum Center of Portsmouth. Next week (November 16th) will be the launch of “This Week in Cymbals,” a similar review of the latest and greatest gear to grace us with its presence, but with a particular focus on bronze pies!

This first issues features 40 new snare drums and 5 new drum sets. Admittedly, we have cheated a little bit and decided to showcase most of the gear that has landed in the last three weeks or so. There is actually quite a bit more, but much of it has sold already. Future issues will likely be a bit shorter with less gear being shown.

This 6.5×14 Gretsch USA Custom snare drum is finished in a Natural Maple gloss lacquer and is accentuated with Gold Hardware that includes Die Cast Hoops, 8 Lugs, and a Dunnett snare strainer. This snare drum is another great example of the fine work done by Gretsch in it’s South Carolina facility

This 6.5×14 Gretsch USA Custom snare drum is finished in a unique Harlequin Black Gloss / Curly Maple finish and is accentuated with Gold Hardware that includes Die Cast Hoops, 8 Lugs, and a Dunnett snare strainer. This is a really great example of the high quality work coming out of Gretsch’s Ridgeland, South Carolina facility.

The Gretsch 8×14 Hammered Brass snare drum features a 1.2mm thin hammered brass shell, 20 lugs, Die Cast hoops, an adjustable Drop-style Throw off, and Evans drum heads (Coated G1 over Hazy 300). If you need a big brass drum that’s a bit drier than the rest, look no further!

The Gretsch 8×14 Full Range Maple snare drum features a 10-ply, 8mm 100% maple shell, 30-degree bearing edges, 20 lugs, Die Cast hoops, a Drop-style Throw off, and Evans drum heads. If you’re looking for a big drum that has that Great Gretsch Sound, look no further.

The Gretsch Mark Schulman signature snare drum is available in 6×12 and 6×13 sizes. The 6×13 model featured on this page is comprised of a 9-ply, 8.6mm thick 100% Maple shells with double bubinga inlays and 45-degree bearing edges. Standard Gretsch fittings includes Die-cast hoops, adjustable throw-off, Evans G1 coated batter and and Evans Hazy 300 snare side heads. Other features include a signature designed badge and extra wide 42-strand snare wires.

The Gretsch Vinnie Colaiuta Signature Snare Drum in Natural Satin is an amazing, versatile snare, true to Vinnie’s style. The Gretsch Vinnie Colaiuta Signature Snare Drum is offered in a 5×14 size with an 8ply maple shell and features 8 lugs, chrome hardware, die casts hoops, Gretsch Permatone drum heads, Gretsch’s renowned Lightning snare throw-off and Vinnie Signature Badges. The Gretsch Vinnie Colaiuta Signature Snare is a true reflection of the classic sounds inspired by this legendary drummer.

Gretsch Rosewood snare drums are made using Rosewood (obviously!), which is a hard, dense wood that projects a powerful full-bodied sound. The natural beauty of Gretsch’s Rosewood snare drum contrasts its naturally aggressive sound. The reddish/brown wood grain features a complex grain pattern that is highlighted by the clear high-gloss finish. All Gretsch Rosewood snare drums feature 100% 9-ply Rosewood shells with 30-degree bearing edges, die-cast hoops, a traditional throw-off and an adjustable butt plate.

Gretsch Chrome over Brass (COB) snare drums feature a 1.2mm thin brass shell with a highly polished chrome plated finish. Each 5×14 model features 8 lugs, die cast hoops, Gretsch’s Lightning snare strainer, Gretsch Permatone drum heads, a “snap in” drum key holder, Gretsch’s “Drop G” badge, and 42-strand snare wires.
