Mapex Saturn vs. New Saturn Evolution Drum Sets

Mapex vs. New Saturn Evolution Drum Sets

admin |

With the arrival of Mapex’s new flagship line of Saturn Evolution Series drums, we’ve noticed that the original, value-focused Saturn V Series have begun to fade into relative obscurity. With this in mind, we’ve decided to compare and contrast the new, high-end Evolution with the classic Saturn V’s.

The Similarities

While there are many more differences between these two Saturn Series, the similarities are notable. Both Saturns share the same lugs, heavy-duty bass drum legs and spurs, floor tom legs and brackets, as well as tom-mounting hardware.

All bearing edges feature Mapex’s innovative “SoniClear” design.

The Differences

Shells

The most obvious difference between these two Mapex drum sets is the shell construction. While both feature a hybrid Walnut composition, the ply layouts are totally different. The Saturn V series feature an overall thinner shell, with the Walnut plies displayed prominently on the inside of the Maple plies. The Evolution consists of thicker plies, with the walnut sandwiched inside a choice of either Maple OR Birch plies.

Tom Mounts

One of the biggest improvements brought about by the Evolutions is the new HALO tom mount system. This lateral, unique "under lug-line" suspension system allows the drum to sing with an open, pure tone. The Adjustment Knob acts as a built-in Equalizer that can slightly dampen the resonance of the shell, producing a tighter and quicker decay.

Hoops

The Saturn Evolution series boast Sonic Saver Hoops as standard equipment, vs. the Saturn V traditional triple-flanged hoops. Sonic Saver Hoops bridge the gap between flanged hoops and die-cast hoops. A unique shaping process creates a profile that reduces wear and tear to both sticks and hands while dramatically enhancing the response and feel of every rim shot.

Size and Finish Options

One of the biggest advantages to the new Saturn Evolutions is the size and finish options. These flagship drums give you exponentially more choices when putting together your idealized high-end drum set when you factor in the number of finishes, drum depths, and even combining maple and birch hybrid shells.

The Difference in Sound

In our latest in-depth comparison, we put the Saturn V up against the Evolution Maple. The differences were clear to our ears.

The thinner-shelled Saturn V’s produce a fuller, more round tone overall. The New Evolution Series projects a more pointed, narrow sound we would typically associate with high-end drums. Both of these sounds are exceptional, so which is best for you? Ultimately, it depends on what scenario you see yourself using them in. The Saturn V is an audio engineer's dream, especially if the music requires big, space filling sound. If you’re planning on playing a ton of notes, requiring a bit more articulation, we would suggest the Saturn Evolution Series.

Our Verdict

Both iterations of the Mapex Saturn are a tremendous value, hitting WAY above their respective price-points. Ultimately, the value proposition of the Saturn V’s make them one of the best drum sets your money can buy. BUT, if you want to dial in your dream kit, the overall fit and finish options afforded by the Evolution Series make them worth your serious consideration.
