NEW FOR 2022 - Ludwig Universal Snare Drum Review

When it comes to snare drums, it doesn’t get much better than Ludwig. From the tried and true Supraphonic and Acrolite, to the legendary Black Beauty, no other snare drum manufacturer packs as much mojo as our friends in Monroe, North Carolina. Needless to say, we were extremely excited to get early access to their newest line of snare drums - the Ludwig “Universal Series”.

Ludwig's Universal Snare Drum series offers drummers new sonic palettes of sounds to complement virtually any style of music. Universal Snares were designed to bring unique musical voices to the stage that work well in various musical styles across multiple tuning ranges, at prices that make them accessible to the masses. This new offering from Ludwig is available in two iterations - exotic wood and black nickel over brass.

Ludwig Universal Wood Snare Drums

The most unique snare drums in the Universal Series are without a doubt the four 14x6.5 wood models. Available in Mahogany, Cherry, Beech and Walnut, these instruments are as aesthetically impressive as they are sonically pleasing. Each wood variety offers a unique tonal voice with high-end wooden veneers. At only $449, these are among the best values currently offered by any manufacturer we stock at Drum Center of Portsmouth.

Ludwig Universal Brass Snare Drums

Modeled after their famous Black Beauty, Ludwig Universal Brass Snare Drums emphasize articulation, sensitivity, and dark warm tones. The Universal Metal Brass drum delivers a rich, dynamic range suitable for various tuning ranges and head combinations. Universal Metal drums are fitted with heavy duty tube lugs, P88i throw-off, P35 butt plate, and 20 strand snare wires. The most notable differences between the 2022 Universal Brass and the former “Black Magic” series are the sizes and hardware options. These versatile snares are available in Ludwig’s most popular sizes: 5.5x14, 6.5x14, 7x13, and 8x14. Each size is also offered with two choices of hardware - chrome with triple flanged hoops, or black nickel over brass with diecast hoops.

The Black Nickel Die-Cast Hoops have a sharper attack and cut in more aggressive playing styles. Die-cast offers a loud, crisp, clean rimshot and cross-stick sound. Chrome-Plated Triple Flange Hoops have a balanced and controlled sound. Triple flange hoops offer a softer, more subtle rimshot and cross-stick sound.

Our Verdict

The new Ludwig Universal Series are an excellent value proposition for drummers on a budget. The wooden models offer a wide range of tones to suit any musical situation and look incredible. The brass models successfully capture the Black Beauty vibe at pricing that won’t drain your bank account. To get the most from these drums, we would highly recommend swapping out the stock Remo UT heads for some higher quality Remo USA snare drum heads, like a Coated Ambassador on the top, and a Snare Side Ambassador on the bottom.
