A Look Back in History | Sakae Drums
Okay, you might be wondering —— “This is the first time I’ve heard of Sakae drums, where did it originate? What are their signature products? Who are these drum sets for?” Well, join me ‘til the end because I’ll make sure that all of those questions will be answered!
The Sakae and Yamaha Connection
Back in the 1960s, when Yamaha was still making legendary drums in their Hamamatsu, Japan factory — the company came up with an incredibly effective recipe for making drums. And before you know it, the global market was suddenly clamoring for these Yamaha drums!
That’s right. However, Yamaha basically didn’t have the means and capacity to manufacture those drums at scale and meet the global demand. So, what they did was they outsourced the manufacturing and production of their drums to Sakae. Therefore, for many many years, that’s how the partnership between Yamaha and Sakae went.
Now, as years went by, Sakae eventually decided that they wanted to branch out and make their own brand of drums. At the same time, Yamaha had already been investing and wanted to shift the company’s focus on their colossal factory in China where they make their famous pianos and guitars. The bottom line — Yamaha and Sakae parted ways in the early 2010s. Yamaha moved the production of its high-end drums to China and Sakae launched their own brand of drums to the global market.
Sakae Meets the World
Sakae or Sakae Osaka Heritage aims to offer the world high-quality and top-performing drums that are made by hand. The company focused on emphasizing the importance of attention to detail and the masterful execution of traditional Japanese drum making.
Sakae drum makers were extremely particular with the type of wood, shell designs, laminate type, number of plies, type of glue, painting, and the overall assembly process of each of their drums. That’s exactly why it takes a LONG time for them to assemble and manufacture their drum products. Hence, Sakae only produces a limited number of drums each year.
Now, Sakae had a hard time establishing its name in the global market, particularly in America where it failed to secure a foothold. It also received lots of criticism regarding the name of the products they’re using and some of their marketing choices. But hey, when it comes down to it — these Sakae drums are absolute killers!
Full Circle Moment | Sakae and Korg
Due to the company’s relatively poor performance in the global market, Sakae eventually ceased its operations in Osaka, Japan. This led Korg, the keyboard company, to acquire Sakae’s name and recruit some of its drum makers so they could continue to produce high-end drums.
So if you think about it, this was actually a full-circle moment for Sakae. Right? Sakae initially branched out from Yamaha and produced their own brand of high-end drums but now, Korg acquired Sakae and produces their very own high-end drums with Sakae’s influence.
However, this venture by Korg didn’t last long either. Korg was offering professional high-end drum sets priced at $3500+ so it was a very expensive commodity for the majority of the market. Eventually, Korg gave up and that’s when they gave us a call!
DCP and Korg | Great Deal on High-End Drum Sets
So, Korg gave us a call basically saying “Hey, we’ve got a bunch of these amazing high-end drum sets and we’re planning to blow ‘em out”. Ah, that’s literally the definition of music to my ears!
Of course, we didn’t let that golden opportunity slide which finally led us to this present moment. You know that if there’s anything we absolutely love — it’s these blowouts. Why? Reasons Why We Love It:
- Maple Shells: The Sakae Evolved kits are made with top-grade 4-ply maple shells that provide a rich, warm tone with excellent resonance and projection. Sakae knew that maple is known for its versatility — producing a balanced sound across the frequency spectrum.
- Impressive Hardware and Design Features: The Sakae Evolved Series used innovative designs for the drums’ hardware to ensure maximum sustain and ease of use. For instance, the toms feature isolation mounts that allow them to resonate freely without the hardware restricting their vibration.
- Sound and Performance: One of the greatest things about the Sakae Evolved Series is its ability to produce distinct and articulate sound. The drums deliver a clear and focused tone, especially the toms which are singing with rich overtones.
Some Downsides:
- High Cost: First things first, this is a premium high-end drum set. Of course, its price point is relatively high, which may not be suitable for everybody.
- Thin Shells: Some people love the idea of thin shell construction in drums, but some don’t. Thin shells can be more prone to damage especially because of heavy playing or mishandling.
- Limited Availability and Support: As we have extensively discussed in the previous sections, Sakae already ceased its operations in Osaka, Japan. Likewise, Korg decided to discontinue its production of these Sakae drum sets. So, simply put —- what you see is what you get. You may have a bit of a hard time when it comes to the availability of parts or support.
The Sakae Evolved’s Stunning Finishes
Ah, probably the very first thing you’ll notice with the Sakae Evolved 4PC Maple Drum Set is its undeniably stunning finish. This majestic drum set actually took a lot of inspiration from its predecessor — the Sakae Almighty . But as the name itself suggests, the Sakae Evolved is like a level-up version. Offering more advanced specs and features to elevate your drumming!
Oh, and you know what? Sakae used specially selected and superior maple wood to create the shells, ensuring a perfectly balanced sound that’s rich with full musical harmonics. The Sakae Evolved is available in six (6) different finishes that are all equally majestic: “Wine Red”, “Real Black”, “Lazurite Gold”, “Pearl White”, “Destroyer”, and “Turquoise Champagne”.
Sakae was famous for their utmost dedication to drum making. And they’re claiming that the Sakae Evolved is their greatest creation — perfected through the brand’s decades of drum-making legacy. They say that this flagship line is created and refined to perfection in every detail from the number of plies and thickness of the wood all the way to its exterior design. Now that’s absolutely impressive!
Top Grade Hardware | Attention to Detail at its Finest
Now, aside from the Sakae Evolved 4PC Maple Drum Set’s beautiful finish, the hardware that comes with it also deserves some high praise. The tom mounts, the bass drum spurs, the bearing edges, the hoops, the lugs, and everything else on the drum set definitely exude a high-end aura.
Now let’s talk about the tom mount — as you can see from the video at (6:34), it allows you to easily spin the drum around without having to remove the tom from the actual mount itself. This is absolutely a convenient feature that I believe a lot of drummers out there will appreciate.
On the other hand, the bearing edges were masterfully crafted to ensure optimal contact between the drumhead and the shell. This allows for better tuning stability and the production of a more consistent tone. You see? All those tiny details serve a purpose — and that’s to give you the best possible playing experience you can get with the Sakae Evolved 4PC Maple Drum Set!
Perfect Combinations | Expert Kit Recommendations
Ah, and one fantastic detail we couldn’t miss is the shell composition of the Sakae Evolved 4PC Maple Drum Set. Why? Well, it’s very reminiscent of the very first-generation Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute. As you can see, we have a 6-ply rack tom with an additional horizontal inner ply, a 7-ply floor tom, and a 7-ply bass drum each with an additional vertical inner ply.
So, what happens is that you get a nice clean attack off of your 6-ply rack tom, get a little more flack on your 7-ply floor tom, and an extremely punchy bass drum to top it all off!
We recommend these bad boys be equipped with Remo USA Sakae Logo Emperor on the tops, Ambassador on the bottom, and Power Stroke on the kick. Moreover, we believe that the perfect snare drums for the kit are the Canopus “The Maple” Snare Drum and the Canopus One of a Kind Maple Snare Drum with the “Universe Space Wrap” finish. For the cymbals, we’re rocking with the Sabian HHX Complex and Prototypes!
