A Gong Drum is the most rare of modern drum set drums.  They are a hybrid of Toms, Floor Toms, and Bass Drums.  They sometimes are mounted on stands or sometimes on legs.  They sometimes utilize a bass drum hoop (and subsequently a bass drum head), or they use a different profile hoop.  These are meant to be struck with a stick and produce incredibly low pitched tones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Gong Drum FAQs

What is a gong drum?

A gong drum is a large single-headed drum that sits on the floor like a floor tom but produces a deeper, more resonant, gong-like tone. Common sizes are 22, 24, and 26 inch.

How is a gong drum different from a floor tom?

A gong drum is single-headed (open back) vs. a double-headed floor tom. The open back gives it a more resonant, sustained voice with deeper fundamental tone.

Where do drummers use gong drums?

Gong drums appear in jazz, fusion, world music, ambient, and creative drumming settings where a deep tonal voice between floor tom and gong is desired.

What sizes do gong drums come in?

Common gong drum sizes are 22, 24, 26, and 28 inch diameters with various depths. Larger drums produce deeper fundamentals and longer sustain.

Which brands make gong drums?

Major drum makers including Pearl, Tama, Yamaha, and others offer gong drums. DCP stocks gong drums from multiple brands.
