Meinl's Floatune instruments are a line of hand percussion drums—most notably congas, djembes, and tamborims—featuring the innovative Floatune Tuning System. This system is a unique Meinl innovation that distinguishes these instruments from traditional designs.
The Floatune Tuning System isolates all mounting hardware from the drum shell, meaning no holes are drilled through the shell for mounting bolts or hardware.
This design preserves the shell's structural integrity and maximizes its ability to vibrate freely, resulting in improved resonance and a fuller, more natural sound.
Tuning is accomplished via external lugs, similar to other lug-equipped drums, but with the added benefit of enhanced shell vibration.
Shell Material: Commonly made from two-ply Siam Oak or Rubber Wood (Hevea brasiliensis), known for durability and warm tonal qualities.
Heads: Fitted with True Skin Buffalo heads for authentic, natural sound and feel.
Hardware: Chrome-plated steel hardware, including 10mm strong tuning lugs and 4mm rounded SSR-rims for comfort and tuning stability.
Accessories: Many Floatune drums come with additional accessories such as a conga saver (to protect the drum), soundpads, an accessory pouch, an L-shaped tuning key, and tune-up oil.
Finish: Available in high-gloss finishes and various colors, such as Natural and Brown Burl.
Congas: Available in multiple sizes (e.g., 10" Nino, 11" Quinto, 12" Conga, 13" Tumba), typically 30" in height.
Djembes: Modeled after traditional West African djembes, available in wood and sometimes other materials, offering both traditional sound and modern tuning convenience.
Tamborims: Aluminum models with the Floatune tuning system for Brazilian percussion applications.
