This outstanding kit features Pearl's Masterworks "Studio" Shell Recipe – Maple/Gum Shells with Artisan Fiddleback White Sycamore outer veneers & ebony inlays. All drums are fitted with black nickel hardware. Toms feature R2 Air Gyro-L mounts.

Note: This kit is a recreation of the exact one featured on Pearl's Masterworks web page. That original kit was sent to us after its glamour shots at Pearl were taken, and we featured it in a YouTube video (alongside another gorgeous blue Masterworks kit). This kit was made to the same specs as the original, but it features upgraded R2 Air mounts and does not include the 15" snare mentioned in the video. All other specs were kept the same.

The Masterworks Concept

Pearl Masterworks drum sets are meticulously crafted by a skilled Pearl master craftsman. Every step, from handpicking the finest woods and carefully shaping the shell to die-casting and plating the hardware, is done to create truly unique instruments made to your exact specifications.

Shells
Each Masterworks shell is built using Pearl’s exclusive Superior Shell Technology. First, the craftsman selects woods for their exceptional acoustic qualities and mills them to precise thicknesses with overlapping scarf joint seams, ensuring a flawless, airtight fit. These wood layers are treated with Pearl’s "AcoustiGlue," which soaks into the wood’s pores and dries to match its natural consistency, enhancing resonance. Finally, the plies are formed under high-temperature, high-pressure molds, resulting in drums that offer unmatched tone and strength.

Bearing Edges
Beyond the shell material, the bearing edge plays a crucial role in shaping the drum's response and tonal range. With Masterworks, you can choose from three distinct bearing edges:

• 45°
  The 45° bearing edge strikes a perfect balance of attack and warmth, making it ideal for modern music styles.

• Round 45°
  This rounded 45° bearing edge increases head-to-shell contact, boosting the mids and highs for a fuller sound.

• Full Round
  The fully rounded bearing edge maximizes head-to-shell contact, enhancing mid to low frequencies for a richer tone.

Shell Thickness
In addition to selecting the material and bearing edge, Masterworks allows you to customize the thickness of each shell to perfectly suit your desired sound. Thinner shells offer enhanced resonance, ideal for close-range listening, while thicker shells provide increased volume and projection. Medium-thickness shells deliver a balanced compromise between volume and resonance, making them versatile for various applications.

• Thin Shell: Thin shell drums' sound offers the best "near field" or player's experience, which have made them an increasingly popular choice. Pearl's 4 ply, 5mm shell enables relatively easy energy transfer from the heads to the shell, causing the shells to more fully vibrate, imparting a rich, warm "wood" tone to the overall sound. This effect makes thin shells a great choice for recording, where miking techniques can utilize the warmth and tone of the drum. Masterworks' thin shells also feature an extra 4 ply, 5 mm reinforcement ring at both top and bottom to strengthen the shell and add support at critical head contact points.
• Medium Shell: Medium thickness drums have slightly greater stiffness than thin shells and resist some of the energy transfer from the heads, which allows the sound to be slightly "cooler" than a thin shell drum, but with greater volume and projection. As such, Pearl's 6 ply, 7.5mm medium Masterworks shells drums are a great choice for general purpose applications, with a perfect blend of warm, full bodied wood tone and attack, loudness and presence.
• Thick Shell: Thicker shell drums allow most of the player's energy to be focused through the heads directly to the audience, which prevents volume loss through shell resonance. They offer good tone and warmth, but at a lower level than thinner shell counterparts. These drums are ideal for large venues and other applications requiring high sound pressure and volume levels. Masterworks drums offer both an 8 ply, 10mm thickness and a 10 ply, 12.5mm thickness.
• Snare Shells: Pearl's Masterworks wood snare drums can be ordered with up to 20 plies, including a solid 1 ply shell, and with any number of wood combinations and bearing edges, making them one of the most versatile wood snare drums available.

Drum Hardware Options
Pearl’s master craftsmen uphold the same high standards for hardware as they do for the shells. With Masterworks, you can select from a variety of hoop options (Die-Cast or SuperHoop II), lugs (Swivel-Style or Bridge-Style), and mounting brackets (I.S.S., Aluminum OptiMount, or Optimount), and choose from Chrome, Black Chrome, or Gold plating for your hardware.

Finishes
Unlike other custom drums, Pearl’s Masterworks drums are entirely customizable with no pre-made shells or standard finishes. You can choose from a range of fade effects, sunbursts, grain-thru mists, opaque colors, marbleized finishes, satin oil burnishes, or Pearl’s Exotic Artisan Exterior Ply Finishes to match your unique style.

For a truly one-of-a-kind look, you can even provide a fabric or color sample, and Pearl will perfectly match it, ensuring your drums have a distinct and personalized appearance.
