This kit punches in with incredible sound and a gorgeous finish even before considering the remarkable cost vs performance ratio. And, speaking of punch, with Evans Blue Hydraulics on the top and G1’s on the bottom, I get the punch and tone, playing at any volume, that my ears want and that recording/live sound engineers and my bandmates revel in. This combination sounds spectacular at the high volume/intensity of Prog Rock, the musical tonality of Indie/Singer Songwriter gigs, and even for low volume gigs at Yoga studios/houses of worship. Don’t get me wrong, these drums also sing with the G2’s that they come with or when I fit them with UV2’s. I’ve simply found a combo that works wonders in every application.
I gave Gretsch Renowns a good go a few years back but was never all in. Before that it was Sonor Sq1’s; wonderful drums but still not all in. For years before that there were four different custom made maple kits that provided years of fine service. Still, before owning these Tama Starclassic Walnut/Birch kits (one for home and recording and a second one packed up and ready to roll for gigging) I would have never imagined that these Walnut/Birch drums would have become my go-to standard.
I utilize these on both of my Tama Starclassic Walnut Birch kits in tandem with Evans Blue Hydraulics. I often receive compliments from recording and live sound engineers, as well as bandmates, about my sound. They are also a fantastic match with Evans G2’s on top. Love the pricing on the three pack as well as the Player’s Circle Points that can be redeemed on future purchases.

I like all the Tama hat
I heard Corey Wong’s outrageous drummer Petar Janjic play this stack live (two different concerts in one week halfway across the country) and had to add them to my kit immediately. What a fantastic addition! I do a lot of encouragement ton get the audience clapping; these are the PERFECT sound with just the right amount of cut without being obnoxious or too loud. Need finger snaps for the pre-chorus in “Rosanna?” This is the ticket. They self-mix in lower volume settings yet find their sweet spot in the mix of the overheads for a larger gigs. They look badass as well. I’m almost exclusively a Paiste player these days but had to go back to the Meinl well for this gem.
